The road to the National Defence Academy (NDA) is one of the most rigorous selection processes in the country. It tests academics, physical fitness and personality in equal measure. What Is the NDA?
The National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla, Pune, is the joint training academy of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. Cadets complete their training and a degree at the academy before going on to their respective service academies and being commissioned as officers. For a young person who dreams of wearing the uniform, it is one of the most respected paths available straight after school.
Eligibility at a Glance
- Age: candidates must fall within the age window notified by UPSC, generally about 16.5 to 19.5 years at the start of the course.
- Education: Class XII pass or appearing. For the Army wing, any stream is accepted. For the Air Force and Navy wings, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class XII are required.
- Candidates: unmarried male and female candidates can apply.
- Physical and medical standards: candidates must meet the standards laid down by the defence services.

Stage 1: The UPSC Written Examination
The NDA exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission twice a year. It has two papers:

The General Ability Test covers English along with Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography and current affairs. There is negative marking, so careless guessing can cost valuable marks. Strong fundamentals built over Classes IX to XII carry candidates through this stage far better than last-minute cramming.
Stage 2: The SSB Interview
Candidates who clear the written exam are called for a five-day Services Selection Board (SSB) interview, which carries 900 marks. It is designed to assess the Officer Like Qualities of a candidate, not just intelligence.
Screening
On the first day, candidates take an Officer Intelligence Rating test and the Picture Perception and Description Test (PPDT). Only those who clear screening continue.
Psychological tests
These include the Thematic Apperception Test, Word Association Test, Situation Reaction Test and a Self Description. They reveal how a candidate thinks and reacts.
Group Testing
Group discussions, group planning, outdoor obstacle tasks and a lecturette test leadership, teamwork and initiative under pressure.
Personal interview and conference
An interviewing officer explores the candidate's background, interests and motivation. On the final day, the board meets to decide the result.
Physical Fitness
Physical fitness is non-negotiable. Aspirants should build endurance, strength and agility well before their SSB dates. A sensible routine includes regular running, push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups and outdoor sport, built up gradually over months rather than weeks.
Medical Standards
Candidates must meet the medical standards of the defence services, including requirements for eyesight, height and weight, and general health. Aspirants should be aware of these early and take care of their health throughout school.
A Preparation Timeline for School Students
- Classes IX–X: strengthen Mathematics and English, read newspapers daily and build a fitness routine.
- Class XI: start NDA-level Mathematics and General Ability practice alongside the board syllabus.
- Class XII: regular mock tests, current affairs revision and SSB orientation.
Common Mistakes NDA Aspirants Make
- Preparing only for the written exam and ignoring the SSB until the last moment.
- Neglecting English and current affairs, which carry significant marks in the General Ability Test.
